Do not listen on headphones, Laptop-/iMac-/Bluetooth-and/or mono speakers!!!!! The effect will not work! Two seperate speakers at a decent volume are recommended, with no EQ/Bass boost etc.

Quantum Superposition is an exploration of otoacoustic emissions - an acoustic phenomenon in which two separated sine waves mix in the air and create a new, third tone inside the listener’s ear. Otoacoustic emissions arise through cellular and mechanical causes within the inner ear and were first proven in 1978. Currently they are used in medical contexts to test for hearing impairments.

Here, I use otoascoutic emissions as an instrument to explore a space between music, art, biology and quantum physics.

Quantum Superposition is an unusual listening experience, engaging the listener externally and internally as they both become and create a part of the piece they are listening to. As the listener wanders through the phenomenon, they themselves become a vital and unique instrument in the composition, creating new sounds within their own inner ear - a very personal journey. The listener isn’t just immersed, but slowly absorbed into the piece. The piece is both the question and the solution. It is the turmoil, the turbulence, and the willingness to discover, to engage - to be uncomfortable, to go through, to experience, to walk the path.

The title Quantum Superposition reflects the many parallels between the composition and quantum physics. We are not able to hear the piece in its "true" state, only with our added subjective tone on top. By simply observing, we alter the physical actuality, making us question our perception and the true nature of reality.

Quantum Superposition was created during my Audiodesign (B.A.) studies at the HdpK in Berlin. It marks marks the first step in an exploratory journey of physical phenomenons in sound. It was realised with a custom built Synthesizer, in Max for Live.
